New project related to sustainability, CICLO Cooperation and Research for Circularity in the Wind Industry

This project has a budget of €4,033,073.00 and the consortium is composed of 8 companies: ACCIONA Construcción, AFESA Medio Ambiente, INPRE, Omar Coatings, Plastibor, Industrial de Transformados, Envoenzyme, and Menzolit. Additionally, it includes 6 research centers with extensive experience and reputation: Gaiker, ICTP-CSIC, ICP-CSIC, ICB-CSIS, AITIIP, and AITEX.

The main objective of the CICLO project is to research new technological solutions to promote the circular economy in the field of renewable energy, specifically in the recycling and valorization of wind turbine blades and other composite components used in the construction of wind turbines such as nacelles, electrical cabinets, etc., at the end of their life cycle. Furthermore, research will be conducted aimed at developing alternative materials to the current ones that are more easily recyclable, i.e., recyclable polymer matrices.

INPRE’s objectives in this project, among others, focus on using more sustainable technology to protect the environment, aiming towards the recyclability of new products. Additionally, it seeks to valorize wind turbine blade waste and other plastics by developing new products with recycled material with mechanical properties and qualities suitable for their use.

The CICLO project responds to Mission 3 “Promotion of the circular economy – particularly recycling and valorization in the field of renewable energy and energy storage,” and specifically, its theme focuses on the development of “Technologies aimed at recycling wind turbine blades, specifically the separation of composite materials.”

The TransMisiones 2024 initiative is an action executed in collaboration between CDTI and AEI, contemplated in the State Plan for Scientific, Technical, and Innovation Research (PEICTI), through which funding is coordinated for groups of research and knowledge dissemination organizations and groups of companies that collaborate for the joint development of a coordinated R&D action that responds to the challenges identified in the thematic priorities or Missions.
